Rainbow Projections - The Hidden Object, Artist 's edition screen print/ installation, 2019
April 2019,
11 artists in one space. In this room, behind a curtain, there is an object by the hand of the artist and blacksmith Steve Spilstyns. We watched the scene all together for about 10 minutes and then let it disappear.
What followed was an invitation to create a work inspired by the hidden object.
I started with this project on making 3 graphic projection planes of the hidden object that I saw: the front plane, left plane and the top view plane. I first partly reconstructed the scene in my studio in which formal elements of the original were incorporated and then finished the three projection views through photo montage of images from my personal photo archive. A new and different object or scene emerged.
What is hidden remains hidden, it is the imagination that fuels and shapes our desires, - endless possibilities.
For this installation that consists of 2 screen prints, I searched for a way to present the 2 dimensional screen printed work in a 3 dimensional way, by printing on both sides of the paper, folding the paper and finally by presenting this object on a minimalist pedestal in the space. The folding of the paper created a new, open space , that represents to me the hidden object. Literally - I created an opening in the work - located in the transition area between 2 and 3D, on which I screen printed the front, left and top view plane of the hidden object. In this way - for me, it represents also a place where the reconstruction of the memory and/of our imaginations can take place, - to meet and see again.
The object as a ritual - as an expression of a personal quest for devotion.
The second screen printed work, presented in a framework, enters into a dialogue with the folded print, by taking the photographic image of the woman on the chair, in a different position and enlarging it. Finally I screen printed this image as an interrupted image, with open spaces in between, as a blind curtain.
