We worden getraind om de inhoud van afbeeldingen te begrijpen. Om bijna direct en deels onbewust het beeld te analyseren, te structureren om zo betekenis toe te kennen. Beelden worden vaak gelezen als -statische- teksten.
In mijn recent werk benader ik visuele perceptie als een actief dynamisch proces, waarin de positie van de kijker significant wordt in het lezen van de afbeelding.
Het ‘zien’ gebeurt zo ergens tussen de waarnemer en datgene dat wordt waar genomen. Er is geen strikte scheiding meer tussen deze twee maar een verschuivend "tussenin", een fenomeen dat beide zijden als actieve spelers omvat:
- de afbeelding
bestaande uit ritmische structuren (de onderliggende architectuur van het beeld) in kleuren die bepaalde frequenties absorberen en bepaalde frequenties weer uitstralen in de ruimte en zo het 2-dimensionale beeld een 3-dimensionale werking geeft,
- de toeschouwer
die vanuit verschillende posities in de ruimte, door de verschillende ‘verschijningen’ voor het oog, het werk anders gaat en kan waarnemen.
Op die manier wordt het kijken afhankelijk van de positie van de waarnemer en dus gedeeltelijk verstoken van de representatie om ook ‘spatio-temporal’ te worden, in een ervaring met een veld dat voortkomt uit het onderlinge samenspel van twee oppervlakkten: het netvlies en het canvas.

We are trained to understand content of images, to instantly analyze form,
structure and to automatically assign meaning to them. Images are often read as -static- texts.
Visual perception can also be perceived as an active dynamic process in which
the position of the viewer become significant in the reading of the image.
By coming across the screen print series Prélude or the installation Paysage, recent work
by Wilfried Pulinckx, we suddenly realize that seeing happens eventually somewhere
between the observer and the observed. There is no strict separation anymore between
this two instances but a shifting "in-between",
a phenomenon that includes both sides as active players:
- the image
consisting of colors, pigments that absorb certain frequencies, reflecting the others and
shaped in rhythmic structures (the grid) that radiates into the space
(giving the 2 dimensional image a 3 dimensional operation),
- the one who sees
as someone who moves and alters the distance and angle towards this source and thus
receives (or should we say creates?) different aspects (literally:
differents appearances to the eye and mind) and meanings of the image.
It as if the artist wants us to discover a way of seeing that depends on the position of
the observer and so partly is devoid of representation to become also a spatio-temporal
experience of a field that emerges from the mutual interplay of two surfaces:
the retina and the canvas.

Both fascinated by the appearance of light and color, we make installations where the "image as experience" takes a central place. We approach perceiving as an active dynamic process in which the position of the viewer becomes significant in reading the image. With glass as basic material and screen printing as a technique we are investigating the world of light and color, creating a landscape of images, imagination and projections.
The light forms, distorts and breaks.
The image falls apart and comes together.

Transformation is inherent to the landscape.
I make prints and installations in which each project takes a different path. In my installations I use often screenprints, (on paper, metal, glass, plastic) or video projections, fans, strobes, smoke machines, fruit and more.
I’m fascinated by landscapes, the phenomenon of color, the psychedelic, graphic art as visual music and Eros. These concepts form the main panorama of my artistic practice.
It can be the memory, the obsession, the imagination of..., the desire for...,
but it can also be the photographic image, the digital design environment, the history and aesthetics of painting, the sensuality of the body and the sensuality of the landscape, the dialectic in the artistic practice, that makes me see and experience the landscape, and my work in many different ways.

Wilfried Pulinckx van opleiding graficus, studeerde af aan het KASK in Gent en werkte daarna een aantal jaren als scenograaf en videokunstenaar in diverse theaterprojecten. Hij benadert zijn grafisch werk vanuit meerdere disciplines. Zo verwerkt hij in zijn installaties vaak zeefdruk (op papier, metaal, glas, plastiek,...), videoprojecties en ook ventilators, stroboscopen, rookmachines, fruit en meer. Hij is gefascineerd door het motief, de metafoor en het fenomeen ‘landschap’, het verschijnsel ‘kleur’, het psychedelische, grafische kunst als visuele muziek en de alles omvattende eros. Wilfried maakt bewust gebruik van zichtbare rasterlijnen en optische kleurmenging, de gezeefdrukte fotografische beelden vibreren zo als het ware in de ruimte. De intimiteit van zijn beelden, zichtbaar vanop afstand, verdwijnt van dichtbij en maakt plaats voor de zinnelijkheid van de beeldstructuur. Het werk van Wilfried spreekt over voelen, over de beleving van ruimte, over lichamelijkheid, over kleur en over licht.
